Gombe, Nigeria – The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Gombe State has successfully foiled an alleged plan to host a same-sex wedding, leading to the arrest of 76 individuals. The announcement was made by the state Public Relations Officer, Buhari Sa’ad, during a press briefing held at the command’s headquarters.
The operation, led by Commandant Mohammed Muazu, resulted in the apprehension of 59 males and 17 females at Duwa Plaza, located along the Bauchi-Gombe Expressway. The suspects were allegedly celebrating a homosexual birthday gathering, with plans to proceed to a same-sex wedding ceremony.
According to Sa’ad, “21 of the 59 males have confessed to being homosexuals.” The authorities will be charging all the suspects in court to answer for their alleged crimes. The enforcement agency is determined to uphold the laws of the land against activities deemed contrary to the Nigerian legal framework.
Homosexuality remains a contentious subject in Nigeria, as same-sex relationships are criminalized under the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act signed into law in 2014. The act prohibits same-sex marriages, public displays of affection between same-sex couples, and membership or support of LGBTQ+ organizations.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, along with other security agencies, continue to conduct operations to ensure compliance with the law and maintain public morality.
It is important to note that the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The case will be closely monitored as it progresses through the legal system.
