Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa has reportedly appointed his son, David Kudakwashe Mnangagwa, and his nephew, Tongai Mafidhi Mnangagwa as Deputy ministers.
The 80-year old Emmerson Mnangagwa was said to have appointed the two members of his family in his new cabinet following his re-election.
His move has drawn widespread criticism, with calls for concern about nepotism rising within the government.
According to local media in Zimbabwe, Mnangagwa’s son will serve as the deputy to Finance Minister, Mthuli Ncube, with his nephew, Tongai Mafidhi Mnangagwa, drafted to serve as the deputy minister of tourism and hospitality.
This new cabinet consisted of 26 ministries.
Senior members of the political class has condemned the appointment with a lawmaker from the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Fadzayi Mahere, describing them as “indefensible.”
Mahere expressed concerns about legitimacy, corruption, nepotism, incompetence, and ethical issues within the government.
