Niger: PDP govs knock Tinubu’s call for military intervention

The Peoples Democratic Party governors have cautioned President Bola Tinubu against embarking on any military intervention in Niger Republic over the coup that led to the removal of President Muhammed Bazoum.

The PUNCH reported that members of the Economic Community of West African States, Authority of Heads of State and Government, on Sunday, issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Nigerien military to restore constitutional order and reinstate ousted President Bazoum into office. However, today marks the end of the ultimatum.

The chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, disclosed while reading the communiqué of the meeting of the governors elected under the party attended by its presidential candidate for the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, and other stakeholders.

He said, “The meeting advised the President, Commander in Chief and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria not to go into any form of war with the Republic of Niger over the recent military coup in the country, rather all tools of dialogue and diplomacy should be further employed.”

Mohammed said the stakeholders highlighted the necessity for party discipline and reiterated their stance not to tolerate any sabotage and anti-party activities.

The communique noted that, “No individual or group of individuals will be allowed to undermine the unity of the party and its processes.”

Additionally, it stated that the party’s leaders reaffirmed their dedication to its repositioning and stability noting that the gathering was a loud and clear indication that the PDP would continue to cherish its members’ loyalty and unity and would do so by rewarding them.

The communique also read, “All the governors and organs of the party solidly support the PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, GCON, and the Vice Presidential candidate, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa, to rescue the stolen mandate in the tribunal and would do everything lawful towards achieving this.

“The Governors will work in partnership with the party at the state and national levels to ensure good governance, transparency and accountability.”
