Slain UI don buried amid tears, cleric condemns killers

Emotions ran high as family, friends and colleagues gathered to bury the remains of the murdered Professor Isaac Ajewole of the Department of Forestry Resources Management, University of Ibadan, Oyo State.

The remains of the professor, who was shot dead by gunmen at the front of his house in the Orogun community in the Akinyele Local Government Area of the state, were interred at the cemetery of the Cathedral of St. James The Great, Oke Bola, near Ijokodo, Ibadan.

Speaking during the church’s burial service on Tuesday, the President of Men of Issachar Vision Incorporated in Ibadan, Rev Samson Ajetumobi, condemned Ajewole’s killers and noted that they won’t go unpunished.

Drawing references for his sermon from Corinthians 1, Chapter 15, Verse 45 to 58, Ajetumobi said, “It is okay to die because it is the price all the living pays. Almighty God determines our days and so it is okay to die but what is not okay is killing. It is punishable by God and man. Ajewole didn’t die, he was killed.

“God does not kill people when they are serving the cause that pleases him. Those who killed Ajewole, the planners and killers will die by blood. If you shed somebody’s blood, your blood will go for it. Checkmate the wickedness of your intentions. God hates the hands that pull the trigger against a man that was going home returning from his office. We are all aware of the insecurity in Nigeria.

“Our academic environment has become a place for physical and spiritual conflicts where sacrifices are placed by desperate individuals. We kill one another because we can’t keep each other. I do recognise the fact that people kill each other because of envy and jealousy. Individuals do business and kill each other. God knows everything.”

Ajetumobi, while advising people to desist from criminal activities including the killing of people out of rivalry and jealousy, said everyone would account for their deeds.

“There are colleagues that engage in rivalry. It is not good to waste people’s lives out of rivalry, cruelty and jealousy. Everyone will die. Nothing will appease Ajewole’s blood except the blood of Jesus.

“Everyone will surely account for his deeds on earth and you will decide your fate in eternal life through your actions and you will face the judgment.” He added.

Meanwhile, the late Ajewole’s wife, Elizabeth, sons, Aanuoluwatomiwa and Ireoluwatunmise, alongside other relatives and sympathisers, shed tears as the remains of the late professor were interred at the cemetery.
