Outstanding personalities and institutions in the broadcast industry were celebrated at the maiden edition of The Nigeria Broadcasting Awards, which is organised by the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria. The programme, which was created to recognise and reward excellence in the broadcast industry, was held on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at the Eko Hotel Convention Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The event, which was hosted by popular broadcaster, Frank Edoho, held in an atmosphere of camaraderie and excitement as professionals in the industry came together to appreciate one another.
The founders of DAAR Communications, and Minaj Broadcasting, Raymond Dokpesi and Michael Ajegbo respectively were recognised for their contributions to the growth of broadcasting in Nigeria, while posthumous awards were given to Segun Olusola, Mike Enahoro, Dahiru Modibbo and Kunle Olasope, for their roles in advancing the industry.
In the same vein, Lifetime Achievement awards were given to a diplomat and one-time Director–General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, Christopher Kolade; the first Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority, Vincent Maduka; and the first Nigerian to superintend over NTA and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria.
Arise TV was also one of the big winners on the night, as it carted away three awards— ‘Television Station of the Year’, ‘Best Television Station— News in English Language’; and ‘Reporter of the Year—Television’ for one of the station’s reporters, Ovieteme George.
In his opening address at the ceremony, BON Chairman and the Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria, John Ugbe, said the awards attested to BON’s commitment to continuous improvement of standards in the broadcast industry. He said, “We consider it important to reward excellence and project the Nigerian broadcasting industry as one committed to the continual improvement of standards. Through these awards, we commit to shining the spotlight on exceptional talent.”
