Workers handling Section 3B of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project have embarked on a protest, demanding the removal of expatriate managers over alleged salary deductions, unpaid entitlements, intimidation and poor working conditions.
The workers reportedly began the protest on Monday, vowing to sustain the action until their grievances are addressed. Security personnel, including soldiers, have been deployed to the project site amid the demonstration.
The protesters are also demanding the reinstatement of Mr Asuquo Ukpayang as Cross River Liaison Officer. They alleged that expatriate managers had refused to work with him because he represented the interests of the workers.
Speaking to reporters, Esikere Peter, a quality control and laboratory worker, alleged that management had reduced the number of paid working hours, resulting in salary losses for employees.
He further claimed that some night shifts extending until 11 p.m. were excluded from workers’ records, leading to concerns over unpaid hours and entitlements.
The workers insist that their demands must be addressed, maintaining that the protest will continue until the issues are resolved.
As of the time of this report, no response from the project management addressing the allegations was provided in the available information.
