~A Message on Democracy, Leadership and the Will of the People
By: Dr. Dennis Osahon Aikoriogie Edoimioya
The final declaration of the Osun governorship election should be seen as more than a political victory. It is a reminder of one fundamental truth: in a democracy, the people remain the true owners of political power.
Elections are meaningful only when citizens are allowed to freely choose their leaders and their choices are genuinely respected. The ballot must never become a tool for manipulation, intimidation or the highest bidder.
The Osun experience should therefore remind every political leader that no individual, godfather, political structure or financial power is greater than the collective voice of the people.
When citizens vote, they are not merely choosing candidates; they are deciding the direction of their communities and the future they want for themselves and their children.
That is why every legitimate vote matters.
Those entrusted with political office must understand that electoral victory is not a licence for arrogance or personal gain. It is a solemn responsibility to serve. The people expect good governance, better schools, functional healthcare, employment opportunities, security, infrastructure and responsible management of public resources.
At the same time, those who did not emerge victorious must embrace democratic maturity. Where genuine concerns exist, the law provides the appropriate channels for seeking redress. Democracy is strengthened when disputes are resolved through institutions rather than through confrontation.
The real winner of any credible election should ultimately be the people.
Osun must now move beyond campaigns, political divisions and electoral competition. The focus should be on rebuilding trust, promoting unity and delivering tangible development to every citizen, regardless of political affiliation.
Let this election remind us that political power is temporary, but the responsibility to serve the people is sacred.
To the electorate, guard your vote.
To leaders, honour the mandate.
To institutions, protect the integrity of democracy.
And to all Nigerians, never forget that democracy begins and ends with the people.
May the people of Osun enjoy peace, accountable leadership and sustainable development.
When the people speak through the ballot, leadership must listen.
