United States President Donald Trump has signalled the possibility of further military action against Iran, warning that the country’s underground nuclear facility known as Pickaxe Mountain could become Washington’s next target.
Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting at the White House with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Trump said the US was prepared to launch a major strike on the site, which is located near Natanz and is believed by Western intelligence agencies to be an undeclared uranium enrichment facility. The heavily fortified underground complex has long been viewed as a strategic part of Iran’s nuclear programme.
“We’ll be hitting that area pretty soon, and very heavily,” Trump said, adding that although he would not normally announce potential military targets, “there’s not a thing they can do about it.”
The US President also claimed that Iran would require more than two decades to recover from the damage already inflicted by the conflict. “If we left right now, it would take Iran 20, 25 years to rebuild. Okay, and we’re not finished at all… we’re not leaving right now,” he told reporters.
The latest warning comes as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate. Iran reportedly intensified its military strikes across the region on Tuesday, two weeks after hostilities with the United States resumed, with Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain among the countries affected by the attacks. Trump’s remarks are expected to heighten fears of a broader regional conflict as diplomatic efforts to ease tensions remain uncertain.
