Former Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria has described Lionel Messi as the greatest player in football history, despite Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Argentina, led by captain Messi, fell to Spain in the championship match played in New Jersey over the weekend, bringing an end to their title defence.
Following the final, Di Maria paid an emotional tribute to his long-time international teammate, praising Messi’s remarkable contribution to Argentine football and his enduring legacy in the sport.
Speaking to Albiceleste Talk, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid winger expressed his admiration for the Inter Miami star.
“Thank you for being Argentine. Thank you for carrying our flag to the very top of the world.
“Thank you for being an example, both as a player and as a person. You are the greatest in history. You are eternal.”
Di Maria and Messi shared a successful partnership with the Argentina national team for more than a decade, helping the Albiceleste secure several major honours, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Although Argentina fell short against Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, Di Maria’s heartfelt message underscored the lasting impact Messi has had on Argentine football and his status as one of the sport’s most celebrated icons.
