President Bola Tinubu has officially declared open the 18th Africa International Housing Show (AIHS) in Abuja, announcing that 7,171 housing units are currently under construction across the country under the New Hope City Housing Projects.
Represented by Engr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma, the President said the ongoing developments include the 2,888-unit New Hope Housing Project in Katampe, Abuja, 2,084 units in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, and 2,207 units in Lambu, Kano State.
He noted that similar housing projects are being executed nationwide, while new developments are being initiated to address the country’s growing housing demand. Tinubu added that completed estates have already been handed over to state governments for allocation to qualified beneficiaries to ensure prompt occupancy.
According to him, the government is leveraging strategic public-private partnerships and innovative financing models involving the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Family Homes Fund, Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company, mortgage real estate investment funds and private developers to expand access to affordable home ownership.
The President disclosed that beneficiaries have already moved into homes provided under the New Hope Rent-to-Own Housing Scheme, describing the progress as the outcome of deliberate policies and focused implementation.
He further revealed that the Federal Government is working on the proposed Tinubu Mass Social Housing Scheme, which aims to deliver about 150,000 affordable housing units across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas in two phases.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, in his goodwill message, congratulated the organisers of the AIHS for providing a platform that promotes dialogue, innovation, investment and partnerships in Africa’s housing sector.
Akume stressed that Africa’s housing agenda should be guided by policies deliberately designed to boost development, strengthen leadership and expand access to affordable housing across the continent.
Chairman of the Africa International Housing Show, Senator Pius Anyim, said sustainable communities require more than housing construction, stressing the importance of infrastructure and effective urban planning.
He added that the National Urban Renewal Programme is providing essential infrastructure such as roads, drainage, water supply, sanitation, street lighting and environmental improvements in underserved communities nationwide.
