Former Secretary to the Benue State Government, David Salifu, has died after sustaining gunshot injuries during an attack by suspected kidnappers along the Wukari–Makurdi road.
According to reports, Prof. Salifu was travelling from Wukari to Makurdi on Thursday when armed men intercepted his vehicle. The assailants reportedly ordered him to leave his car and climb onto a motorcycle. During the encounter, he was allegedly shot, leaving him with life-threatening injuries.
Following the attack, the former SSG was rushed to a hospital in Wukari for emergency treatment before being transferred to Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi. Despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, he died in the early hours of Friday.
The tragic incident was confirmed by David Olofu, the African Democratic Congress senatorial candidate for Benue South, who described the late professor as a trusted confidant and a valued member of his campaign council.
Prof. Salifu served as Secretary to the Benue State Government during the administration of former Governor Gabriel Suswam. Beyond his role in government, he was an academic and lecturer at Federal University Wukari, where he contributed to teaching and research.
His death has added to growing concerns over insecurity along major highways, particularly the Wukari–Makurdi route, where cases of kidnapping and violent attacks have been reported in recent times.
Family members, friends, colleagues, political associates, and admirers have continued to mourn the late professor, remembering him for his service to Benue State, his contributions to academia, and his commitment to public service.
May his soul rest in peace.
