The United States Department of State has directed the withdrawal of non-emergency personnel and their families from the American Embassy in Abuja, citing a worsening security situation across Nigeria.
The authorized departure order, issued on April 8, 2026, underscores growing concerns about safety conditions in the country, including in the Federal Capital Territory. Despite the move, the embassy in Abuja will remain operational at a reduced capacity, focusing primarily on emergency services, while the consulate in Lagos continues normal operations.
Nigeria is currently classified under a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” advisory by the US government, due to persistent challenges such as crime, terrorism, kidnapping, civil unrest, and limitations in healthcare infrastructure. Several regions within the country remain under the more severe Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory, reflecting heightened risks from armed groups and criminal activities.
In a statement accompanying the directive, US authorities advised American citizens to exercise increased caution and to review the latest travel guidance available on official platforms before making travel plans to Nigeria.
The development highlights ongoing international concern over security conditions in parts of the country, as authorities continue efforts to address various threats and restore stability.
