The US Department of State has instructed non-emergency personnel and their families to leave the US Embassy in Abuja, citing worsening security across Nigeria.
In an updated travel advisory issued Wednesday, Americans were urged to reconsider travel to Nigeria due to crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest. While the overall advisory is “Level 3: Reconsider Travel,” 23 states have been classified as “Level 4: Do Not Travel.”
Newly added to the list are Plateau, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, and Taraba, joining other northern states including Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara. In the south and southeast, Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Imo, and Rivers (excluding Port Harcourt) were highlighted for heightened risks.
The advisory warned of widespread violence, armed robbery, carjacking, and kidnapping for ransom, noting that US citizens are often perceived as wealthy and targeted. Terrorist attacks remain a concern at markets, hotels, places of worship, and public gatherings.
Health services were described as limited and inconsistent, generally not meeting US or European standards. Americans planning travel are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, avoid protests and large gatherings, and maintain personal safety and “proof of life” protocols.
