The planned Finalissima clash between the Argentina national football team and the Spain national football team has been cancelled due to security concerns linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
UEFA announced that the match, originally scheduled for March 27 in Doha, Qatar, would no longer take place because organisers were unable to secure a suitable alternative date or venue as tensions in the Middle East escalated.
The fixture was expected to feature Spain as champions of UEFA Euro 2024 against Argentina, winners of the 2024 Copa América.
In a statement, UEFA expressed disappointment over the development, saying circumstances and timing had prevented both teams from competing for the prestigious title in Qatar.
The Finalissima is jointly organised by UEFA and South American football governing body CONMEBOL, and traditionally pits the champions of Europe against the champions of South America.
Spain secured its place in the fixture after winning Euro 2024, while Argentina qualified by lifting the Copa América trophy in 2024.
Officials had explored options such as relocating the match or postponing it until later in the year. However, scheduling clashes with other international fixtures and security concerns related to the ongoing conflict made an agreement impossible.
The last edition of the Finalissima took place in 2022 at Wembley Stadium in London, where Argentina defeated the Italy national football team 3–0 to lift the trophy.
