Aviation Analyst Applauds Makinde for Upgrading S. L. Akintola International Airport

Aviation analyst, Bagudu Abdullah, has praised Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for transforming the S. L. Akintola International Airport, Ibadan, into a world-class facility — describing it as a landmark achievement for the state.

In a report titled “The Upgrading of S.L. Akintola International Airport Ibadan, a Dream Come True,” Abdullah said the project fulfilled a long-held aspiration of residents and travellers, crediting Makinde’s visionary leadership for turning ambition into reality.

“Before embarking on the international upgrade, Governor Makinde had already shown his commitment by improving local airport operations,” Abdullah noted.

He added that the new international terminal would enhance connectivity, attract foreign flights, and unlock trade, tourism, and investment opportunities for Oyo State. “Local businesses — from agriculture to hospitality — will benefit through increased access and economic activity,” he said.

Abdullah also highlighted the airport’s potential to boost cargo handling, create jobs, and reduce dependence on Lagos airports. He commended the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Federal Government for their support throughout the project.

Acknowledging earlier efforts, Abdullah credited former Senator Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi for championing the airport’s revival during his tenure. “Before Senator Akanbi’s intervention in 2015, the airport was in disrepair with obsolete equipment and leaking roofs,” he recalled.

As Chairman of Dynasty Airline, Akanbi leveraged his aviation background and partnership with then Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika, to remodel the local terminal to modern standards — a project completed and inaugurated on May 19, 2019.

“Today, as the airport attains international status under Governor Makinde, Senator Akanbi’s groundwork remains an enduring legacy of selfless service that continues to inspire progress in Oyo’s aviation sector,” Abdullah said.
