Academic and administrative activities at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) were temporarily grounded on Thursday as members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) embarked on a peaceful protest within the Calabar campus.
The demonstration was held in solidarity with their counterparts in federal universities and other tertiary institutions across the country.
During the protest, union members called on the Federal Government to honor the 2009 agreement reached with university workers regarding welfare packages and other entitlements.
Speaking to journalists, NASU Chairman, Comrade Atim Amah, alongside SSANU Secretary, Comrade Sunny Inaku, said the action was in compliance with directives from their national secretariats.
They urged the government to implement the terms of the long-standing agreement to alleviate the economic hardship faced by university staff.
