IGP Egbetokun Temporarily Suspends Enforcement of Tinted Glass Law Amid Ongoing Legal Challenge

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the temporary suspension of the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991, following a meeting with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

According to a statement released on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the decision was made in consideration of public interest and respect for the NBA, pending the determination of a motion currently before the Federal High Court, Warri, Delta State, scheduled for October 16, 2025.

“While there is no clear court order halting the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991, the Nigeria Police Force, out of regard for Nigerians and the Nigerian Bar Association, has temporarily suspended enforcement pending the outcome of the case,” Hundeyin said.

The statement noted that the Inspector-General received the NBA delegation led by its President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), to discuss the legal and operational implications of enforcing the tinted glass law and to promote synergy between the Police and the Bar in upholding the rule of law.

As part of the meeting’s outcome, a joint Police–NBA committee was inaugurated to strengthen collaboration between both institutions and improve public confidence in law enforcement.

Motorists have been urged to take advantage of this suspension period to regularize their vehicle documentation and ensure full compliance with regulations governing the use of tinted or shaded vehicle glasses in Nigeria.

“The Inspector-General of Police reiterates the commitment of the Force to enforce all existing laws with fairness, transparency, and full respect for the rights of all citizens,” Hundeyin added.

Meanwhile, Hobnob News gathered that a Federal High Court in Warri had earlier ordered the Police to suspend the enforcement of tinted glass permits pending the determination of a substantive case — Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025 — filed by John Aikpokpo-Martins against the Inspector-General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force.

The court directed both parties to maintain the status quo, effectively halting any punitive action against motorists until the matter is resolved.

On October 4, the Force PRO confirmed via his official X handle that the Police had not yet been formally served with the court order but assured that the Force would respect due process and judicial proceedings.

The temporary suspension marks a significant development in the ongoing debate over the legality and enforcement of tinted glass regulations in Nigeria.
