President Bola Tinubu is expected to present his nominee for the INEC Chairman to the National Council of State today at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
With Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure ending next month, Tinubu is reportedly set to name Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, as his preferred successor. Amupitan, from Kogi State, has already passed security screening.
The move signals Tinubu’s intent to avoid a leadership gap at INEC, unlike in 2015 when former President Muhammadu Buhari delayed the appointment of a substantive chairman for months after Professor Attahiru Jega’s exit.
Sources say Tinubu is keen on ensuring credible elections and strengthening public confidence in the electoral process.
