Osun Tragedy: Stepmother Recounts How Amotekun Operatives Killed Two Siblings

By Hobnob News

Akinlalu community in Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State has been thrown into mourning following the killing of two siblings by operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps last Tuesday.

The tragic incident, which left three people dead and eight others injured—mostly women and youths—has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice.

The victims were identified as Ibrahim Oyebamiji (26), Sefiu Oyebamiji, and Abiola Olutayo, while the injured included Adeagbo Kadijat (22), Oke-Ila Oyebamiji (60), and Fayomi Toheeb (19). According to reports, Amotekun operatives reportedly took away the corpses after the shooting.

Speaking during a condolence visit by members of the Osun State House of Assembly, Fausat Oyebamiji, stepmother to two of the slain siblings, narrated the horrifying ordeal.

“Ibrahim was a humble and respectful boy. He came home on Tuesday to run an errand for his father and even gave his mother ₦2,500 for feeding. Shortly after, we heard gunshots — he was hit and died on the spot.

His brother, Ismaila, rushed out after hearing the news and was also shot dead where he tried to hide. Imagine a father losing two children in one day. These Amotekun men must go; they are worse than the police,” she lamented tearfully.

Leading the delegation to Akinlalu, Deputy Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Akinyode Oyewusi, commiserated with the bereaved families and assured residents that a full investigation was underway.

“We understand the community’s pain and assure you that justice will be served. The state government and police have already begun investigating this tragic event,” Oyewusi said.

Community youth leader, Musibau Adeboye, appreciated the lawmakers’ intervention but demanded swift action against the perpetrators.

“We want justice. The Amotekun officers involved must face the law. We also call on the state to restore the police post in our community—its absence made this worse,” he said.

In a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Idowu Yusuf, the Osun Amotekun Corps confirmed that three persons were killed but claimed its officers acted in self-defence.

“Our operatives were ambushed while attempting to recover two rifles seized from them by hoodlums. In the exchange of gunfire, three attackers were neutralised,” the statement read.

However, the community leader, Adeboye, dismissed this explanation, describing the shooting as “unprovoked and barbaric.”

The Nigerian Bar Association (Osogbo Branch) and civil society groups including Nigeria for Good Governance and Dialogue 365 condemned the killings, describing them as “a gross abuse of power and a violation of human rights.”

Similarly, the Omoluabi Progressives, a group loyal to former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, urged Governor Ademola Adeleke to ensure full accountability.

In response, Governor Adeleke ordered a full-scale investigation and expressed deep sorrow over the killings.

“This matter is being thoroughly investigated. Any infraction will be dealt with in accordance with the law. I extend my condolences to the bereaved families and urge residents to remain calm,” the governor said through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.

A delegation of service chiefs and key government officials is expected to visit Akinlalu following the next state security council meeting.
