Reps Committee Meets Political Parties Today on 1999 Constitution Review

The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review will today (Monday) hold a strategic consultation with the leadership of all registered political parties as part of its ongoing efforts to amend the 1999 Constitution.

The committee, chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu, has identified key focus areas for the proposed amendments, including the creation of state police, devolution of powers, local government autonomy, and the introduction of special seats for women in governance.

In recent weeks, the panel concluded a nationwide zonal consultation tour across the six geopolitical zones, gathering stakeholders’ input on the review process. The committee is expected to present a final draft of the proposed amendments to the National Assembly by December 2025 for consideration and adoption.

According to a statement released on Sunday by the House spokesperson, Akin Rotimi, the session will feature deliberations on major reform areas such as special seats for women, judicial and electoral reforms, independent candidacy, local government reforms, state policing, and the protection of human rights.

Rotimi added that the engagement would also allow political parties to make meaningful contributions and share institutional perspectives on the identified national issues.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Deputy Speaker Kalu described the engagement as a vital opportunity for political parties to play a more active role in shaping the country’s constitutional future.

“Political parties remain the engine room of our democracy, and their active participation in this consultation is vital to achieving constitutional amendments that are inclusive, credible, and reflective of the collective aspirations of Nigerians,” Kalu stated.

The committee also disclosed that a summarised compendium of all bills under review has been prepared to guide the discussions during the engagement.
