Nigeria @65: FG Cancels Independence Day Parade, Calls for Reflection

The Federal Government has cancelled the traditional parade earlier scheduled to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary on Wednesday, October 1.

The announcement was made on Monday in a statement from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen.

“The Federal Government wishes to announce the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade, previously scheduled to mark the 65th Independence on Wednesday, October 1. The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary,” the statement read.

It noted that while the parade will not hold, other activities lined up for the celebration remain on schedule. These include the President’s Independence Day broadcast, cultural programmes, and the grand finale of the National Campus Debate.

The government expressed appreciation to Nigerians, the diplomatic community, and invited guests for their understanding, urging citizens to continue supporting President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking at a world press conference in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, described Independence Day as more than a ceremonial occasion, stressing that it provides an opportunity for sober reflection and renewed patriotism.

“Independence Day is a profound opportunity for us to reflect on how far we have come as a people, celebrate our resilience, and renew our commitment to unity, peace, and progress,” Akume said.

He explained that this year’s theme, “Nigeria at 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation,” underscores the importance of collective responsibility in nation-building.

Akume praised President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that although reforms have been tough, they are necessary to restore investor confidence, stabilise the economy, and build a sustainable foundation for growth.

Echoing the message, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the 65th Independence Anniversary as “a monumental commemoration.” He likened the number 65 to sapphire, symbolising loyalty, truth, and wisdom, and compared Nigeria’s journey to the enduring qualities of the stone.

“Nigeria’s path as a sovereign nation has been resilient, wise, and faithful to its destiny,” Idris said. He highlighted reforms in key sectors including taxation, education, energy, agriculture, and healthcare, while commending the country’s continued leadership role in Africa and global affairs.

Nigeria, which gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, has traditionally marked the occasion with military parades, religious services, and presidential addresses.
