Tinubu Warns Pilgrims Against Absconding: “There Is No Country Like Nigeria”

President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerian Christian pilgrims travelling to Israel and Jordan to resist the temptation of absconding, stressing that “there is no country like Nigeria.”

The President, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, gave the charge on Wednesday at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, during the flag-off of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission’s (NCPC) 2025 Delayed Easter Pilgrimage.

Tinubu called on the pilgrims to exhibit patriotism and dignity throughout the spiritual journey, warning that any act of abscondment would not only bring shame but also strip individuals of respect abroad.

“You should not contemplate abscondment in your minds because there is no country like Nigeria. While in Nigeria, you have your freedom and recognition in your own way. But once you stay behind illegally, you automatically lose your respect and dignity,” he said.

He further urged the pilgrims to return with their group at the end of the 10-day exercise, noting that their contributions were needed in nation-building.

Highlighting ongoing reforms, Tinubu acknowledged the economic challenges faced by citizens but assured that his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda would deliver lasting improvements.

“There will certainly be light at the end of the dark tunnel,” he reassured.

The President praised the NCPC under Bishop Prof. Stephen Adegbite for instituting strict measures to curb abscondment, disclosing that the commission had recorded almost zero cases in recent pilgrimages since December 2024. He also commended Adegbite’s efficiency, describing him as “a man of proven leadership” following his appointment as Chaplain of the State House Chapel.

In recognition of state-level support, Tinubu lauded Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma for sponsoring 1,000 pilgrims this year, matching his contribution in 2023.

This year’s Easter pilgrimage, delayed due to heightened tensions in the Middle East, will last 10 days. The government is subsidising the cost, with each pilgrim required to pay ₦4.5 million.
