I join millions of well-wishers across Edo State, Nigeria, and beyond in celebrating a rare gem, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the illustrious Esama of Benin Kingdom, as he marks his 91st birthday.
Chief Igbinedion’s life story is one of vision, resilience, and boundless generosity. Born in Okada in 1934, he rose from humble beginnings to become a towering figure whose achievements continue to shape the destiny of many.
Through hard work and foresight, he built a business empire that spanned aviation, media, real estate, and hospitality, placing Edo State on the global map.
His pioneering establishment of Okada Air remains one of the most remarkable milestones in Nigeria’s aviation history.
More importantly, the Esama’s legacy is etched deeply in education and philanthropy.
His founding of Igbinedion University, the first private university in Nigeria, has transformed the nation’s educational landscape and empowered generations of young Nigerians with knowledge and opportunity. His numerous scholarships, charitable donations, and consistent support for the indigent stand as proof of his unwavering commitment to humanity.
As a cultural custodian, Chief Igbinedion has also upheld and promoted the rich heritage of the Benin Kingdom, earning respect at home and abroad.
His chieftaincy title, conferred in 1974, has been carried with dignity and service, making him not only a businessman and philanthropist but also a statesman and an icon of tradition.
At 91, the Esama remains an inspiration to Edo sons and daughters, embodying the spirit of enterprise, compassion, and patriotism.
