PDP Holds Crucial 101st NEC Meeting Ahead of National Convention

The 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of Nigeria’s leading opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is currently underway at the party’s national secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

In attendance are several key party stakeholders, including the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed; Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke; Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal; Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State; and Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri.

Also present are the Acting National Chairman of the party, Amb. Umar Illiya Damagum; National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu; and Secretary of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, alongside other prominent national party leaders.

In his welcome address, Acting National Chairman Damagum emphasized the significance of the meeting in setting the tone for the party’s forthcoming National Convention, expected to take place later this year. “This gathering is a critical step toward ensuring a smooth and inclusive convention process,” he stated.

Echoing this, Senator Ahmed Makarfi noted that the upcoming convention will not only shape the future of the PDP but will also influence the broader political trajectory of the nation as the 2027 general elections approach. He cautioned members to be mindful of their words and to focus on offering constructive, solution-oriented input during deliberations.

Governor Bala Mohammed, speaking on behalf of the PDP Governors’ Forum, pledged continued support for the success of the party’s National Convention. He, however, sounded a warning on the issue of internal discipline, stressing that a lack of order and accountability had contributed to the PDP’s loss of power at the federal level.

“Indiscipline within our ranks is what brought us to this point. If we must rebuild, we must not turn a blind eye to it,” he asserted.

The NEC meeting has now entered a closed-door session, where members are expected to discuss key issues surrounding the convention, party unity, and strategies for repositioning the PDP ahead of future electoral contests.

More updates to follow as the meeting progresses.
