Tinubu Hails Late Awujale’s Role in 2023 Victory, June 12 Struggle

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, acknowledging the revered monarch’s significant contributions to his success in the 2023 presidential election and the struggle for the revalidation of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential mandate.

Speaking at the 8th Day Friday Prayer held in honour of the late monarch at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, President Tinubu described Oba Adetona as a man of courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to truth and justice.

“The Awujale was always there for us. He supported us during the June 12 annulment. He was steadfast and resolute. He was very honest, bold, courageous, and truthful. He would not deceive you,” Tinubu said.

The President noted that the late traditional ruler was instrumental not only in the pursuit of democratic ideals but also in galvanizing support for the 2023 general election that brought him to power.

According to Hobnob News, Tinubu further stated that Oba Adetona brought dignity and pride to the Yoruba race and that Yoruba history would be incomplete without the late monarch’s invaluable contributions.

The Fidau prayer, which drew a crowd of prominent Nigerians, was attended by the Governors of Ekiti, Ondo, and Kwara States — Abiodun Oyebanji, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, respectively. Also present were the Deputy Governors of Ogun, Lagos, and Oyo States, as well as former governors Olusegun Osoba, Gbenga Daniel, and Ibikunle Amosun.

Members of the National Assembly, Ogun State House of Assembly Speaker, federal ministers, and traditional rulers also joined the event to honour the late royal father.

President Tinubu expressed gratitude to God for granting Oba Adetona a long and impactful life, noting that his 91-year journey was marked by service, unity, and moral leadership. He also commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for the care and respect he showed to the monarch during his final days.

In his tribute, Governor Abiodun described the late Awujale as a “moral compass” and a “voice for the voiceless,” stating that his reign brought unprecedented development to Ijebuland and promoted peace and religious harmony across the state.

“Oba Adetona was a man of unshaken faith who used his position to unite his people across religious divides. He upheld the dignity and culture of the Ijebu people and mentored many. His legacy will remain with us,” Abiodun said.

The governor urged residents to emulate the values of the late monarch and continue fostering peace and unity for the sustained development of Ogun State and Nigeria.
