The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has categorically denied reports claiming the cancellation of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), describing the viral statement as false, misleading, and the product of mischief-makers.
The rumour, which gained traction across social media platforms on Saturday, July 19, 2025, falsely alleged that the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with WAEC had scrapped the 2025 examination due to widespread malpractice, question paper leaks, and unauthorized online distribution of exam materials.
In an official response issued on Sunday, July 20, 2025, and signed by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, the Council refuted the claim and reassured candidates, parents, and the public that no such decision had been made.
“The said examination has not been cancelled,” WAEC stated. “The source of this misinformation is unknown, but we are convinced it is the work of those intent on damaging the Council’s reputation and causing unnecessary anxiety.”
WAEC further revealed that the marking of exam scripts had recently concluded and confirmed that results would be released on or before Thursday, August 4, 2025.
The Council urged the public to rely solely on verified information from its official communication channels, including its authenticated social media handles, accredited media outlets, and Public Affairs Department.
“We appeal to all stakeholders to disregard the fake publication and await the official release of results through appropriate channels,” the statement concluded.
WAEC reaffirmed its commitment to upholding integrity, transparency, and trust in the conduct and management of its examinations across the sub-region.
