Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), bringing an end to a decades-long association with the party he helped establish.
In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku expressed deep regret over his decision, stating that it was driven by the party’s current trajectory, which he believes no longer aligns with the principles upon which it was founded.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter read.
Reflecting on his political journey within the PDP, Atiku noted with pride and appreciation his two-term tenure as Vice President (1999–2007) and his repeated candidacies for the presidency. He described his time in the party as one of the most significant chapters of his life.
“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he wrote. “However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”
He concluded the letter by wishing the party and its leadership success in their future endeavors and expressed gratitude for the support he received over the years.
Atiku’s resignation is expected to send shockwaves through the nation’s political landscape, potentially reshaping dynamics ahead of the next general election. His next political move remains the subject of intense speculation.
