U.S. Embassy, Consulate in Nigeria Suspend Operations to Honour Late President Buhari

In a symbolic gesture of respect, the United States Mission in Nigeria has temporarily shut down operations at both its Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to iReporter Online, the closure follows the national public holiday declared by the Nigerian government in memory of the former president, who passed away on Sunday in London after a brief illness.

Confirming the development on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the U.S. Mission stated that all consular activities — including visa interviews and scheduled appointments — have been suspended for the day. The mission assured affected applicants that their appointments will be promptly rescheduled and that normal operations will resume on Wednesday, July 16.

Hobnob News reports that Buhari’s burial is expected to take place later today in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

This rare diplomatic move by the U.S. underscores the international respect Buhari commanded throughout his leadership and retirement. As noted by iReporter Online, the gesture also reflects the enduring partnership between Nigeria and the United States, even during periods of national mourning.
