Prominent activist and philanthropist Kennedy Iyere has publicly distanced himself from former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, insisting that the Obidient Movement was not created by Obi but by concerned Nigerians who later rallied around him.
In a statement that has stirred debate within political circles, Iyere said the Obidient Movement, which gained momentum during Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, was formed, driven, galvanised, and eventually bequeathed to Peter Obi by citizens and activists. According to Iyere, the movement was designed as a platform for social and political revolution, not as a personal tool for any individual.
“For me as an individual, I’m not supporting Peter Obi,” Iyere stated emphatically. “If Obi had strongly intervened in the crisis in the party and grown the Obidient Movement post-election, he would have been on his own the revolution we are talking about.”
Iyere expressed disappointment that after the 2023 elections, Peter Obi allegedly failed to play a decisive role in resolving the internal crises that plagued the Labour Party. He believes Obi missed the opportunity to expand and solidify the Obidient Movement into a lasting force for systemic change in Nigeria.
Political analysts observe that Iyere’s remarks may reflect growing disillusionment among some original members of the movement, who feel the post-election period has seen the platform lose direction.
The Obidient Movement was initially hailed as a major force in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, especially among youths and first-time voters. With Iyere’s public stance, questions may now arise about the movement’s future relevance and whether it can sustain its momentum independent of Peter Obi’s political influence.
