The Federal Government has dismissed widespread rumours suggesting that water has been released from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, assuring Nigerians that the dam remains at a low level and poses no current threat.
In a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation on Monday, July 7, 2025, the Honourable Minister, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, confirmed that there has been no release of water from the dam. The clarification followed direct communication with Mr. Ahmad Bivoung, the manager of the Lagdo Dam, who confirmed that the current water level stands at 2.06 meters—well below the danger mark.
“The Cameroonian authorities have not released any water from the Lagdo Dam, and the Ministry is maintaining active communication to monitor the situation,” the statement read.
The Minister urged the public to disregard false media reports and to remain calm, while continuing to adhere to flood preparedness measures already circulated by relevant agencies.
In particular, communities in flood-prone areas such as Lokoja (Kogi State), Wurobokki (Adamawa State), and Makurdi (Benue State) were advised to stay alert and consult the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) Flood Dashboard for timely and accurate updates.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to proactive flood management, Prof. Utsev highlighted ongoing efforts, including:
- Reservoir management of dams on River Benue tributaries to avoid sudden water discharges,
- Completion of the design for the Datsin Hausa Dam in Adamawa State, with steps underway to secure a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for its construction,
- Utilization of the Kashimbila Dam in Taraba State for flood control purposes,
- Ongoing upgrade of the Wannune Dam and the near-completion of studies for the Dura Dam, both in Benue State.
The statement, signed by the Permanent Secretary, Richard Pheelangwah, reiterated the Federal Government’s readiness to protect lives and property through enhanced flood response infrastructure and regional collaboration.
