The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially reaffirmed Senator Samuel Anyanwu as its substantive National Secretary, putting to rest weeks of internal tension and speculation surrounding the position.
This resolution was reached during the party’s 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, held on Tuesday at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, Acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum stated that the NEC convened solely to review the party’s recent engagement with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the National Secretary’s status.
> “This was a one-agenda meeting—to discuss the outcome of our interaction with INEC concerning the National Secretary,” Damagum explained.
He confirmed that the NEC unanimously endorsed Senator Anyanwu to remain in office. He further announced that the party’s national convention—previously anticipated—has been rescheduled to July 23, 2025, and will comply fully with INEC regulations. Official notices will be jointly signed by Damagum and Anyanwu.
> “We all agreed that Senator Anyanwu will continue as National Secretary,” he said, reinforcing the party’s unified position.
Addressing speculations about a potential breakdown within the PDP, Damagum dismissed such claims as unfounded. He noted the full presence of PDP governors and senior stakeholders as proof of the party’s cohesion.
> “To those who expected division, the turnout today reflects our unity and institutional resilience. The PDP knows how to manage its internal issues,” he declared.
He added that the NEC decision would bring an end to the recent spate of dissent and conflicting press releases, signalling a fresh chapter of internal harmony and strategic planning.
