Shehu Sani Urges Tinubu to Reject Renaming of Abuja Conference Centre

Former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reject the recent decision by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration to rename the Abuja International Conference Centre after him.

Hobnob News reports that FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday officially announced the renaming of the iconic facility as the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre during its inauguration ceremony.

Minister Wike also revealed that various halls within the facility have been renamed to honour other high-ranking government officials. Among those recognized are Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and Chief Justice of Nigeria Olukayode Ariwoola Kekere-Ekun.

In a swift reaction posted on his official Facebook page, Senator Sani criticized the renaming, stating that the centre was originally built under the administration of former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), and should retain its historical identity.

“The International Conference Centre Abuja was built by IBB. The President should reject renaming the place with his name,” Sani wrote.

The move by the FCT administration has sparked debate among citizens and political observers, with some viewing the renaming as premature and politically motivated. President Tinubu is yet to respond to the call by Senator Sani or comment publicly on the renaming.
