The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a comprehensive three-day weather forecast, warning of thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall across various parts of the country from Sunday through Tuesday.
In a weather bulletin released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet predicted that morning thunderstorms will kick off Sunday’s weather in parts of Taraba and Adamawa States. This is expected to intensify later in the day with thunderstorms and rain spreading to areas including Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, Jigawa, Borno, Gombe, and Bauchi.
North-Central Nigeria
A cloudy morning is expected, giving way to afternoon thunderstorms and rainfall over the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and Plateau States.
Southern Nigeria
Morning hours will see a cloudy atmosphere across the region, followed by showers later in the day affecting Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Edo, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa States.
Monday Forecast
Morning thunderstorms are predicted for Sokoto, Zamfara, and Bauchi in the north. As the day progresses, more rain and storms will spread across Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Borno, Bauchi, and Kaduna States.
The North-Central region will also experience morning thunderstorms and rain in FCT, Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa, followed by more rain later in Plateau, Kwara, and Benue.
Southern states like Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom will likely begin the day with rain, which may continue throughout the region into the evening.
Tuesday Outlook
Zamfara and Kaduna will likely see isolated morning thunderstorms with moderate rain, followed by afternoon storms in Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe, and Borno.
In the North-Central region, Niger, Plateau, and Benue will have morning rainfall, which will later extend to FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, and Benue.
Southern areas, particularly Lagos and Bayelsa, will likely experience morning rains, with showers expected to persist throughout the day across the region.
Safety Advisory
NiMet urged Nigerians to take safety precautions, especially as strong winds may accompany thunderstorms in several regions.
“Disconnect all electrical appliances during thunderstorms. Stay indoors and away from tall trees. Airline operators should obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for safe flight planning,” the agency advised.
“Residents are encouraged to stay updated through NiMet’s official channels for timely weather information.”
