Tensions are mounting at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, Imo State, over controversies surrounding the appointment of a new rector and a proposed nationwide strike by the National Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP).
In a dramatic turn, former ASUP chairmen and leaders of other unions at the institution, including FEPNOWA, WITED, FAWEN, the Alumni Association, and the Academic Staff Congress, have publicly distanced themselves from the strike.
Speaking in a statement on Saturday, Dr. Anayo Uhiara, representing the former ASUP chairmen and the academic staff, declared that the local ASUP chapter (ASUPNek) had not authorized participation in the national body’s strike, particularly on grounds related to the appointment of the new rector, Dr. Basilia Igbokwe.
“The congress resolved to dissociate itself from the industrial action planned by the national ASUP. Such a move is seen as embarrassing and self-serving, without the endorsement of the chapter congress,” Uhiara stated.
Highlighting internal conflicts, Uhiara revealed that a vote of no confidence had been passed on ASUPNek chairman Stanley Nwadike by five of his nine executive members on October 30, 2024. This was reportedly due to his refusal to distance the chapter from what was described as “clandestine activities” by the national leadership against the transparent selection of the institution’s rector.
To stabilize the situation, former ASUPNek chairmen were asked to oversee union affairs, with actions such as locking the ASUPNek solidarity complex and halting the deduction of check-off dues until the crisis is resolved.
However, Nwadike stood firm, arguing that the industrial action is essential to address alleged violations in rector appointments at polytechnics in Nekede, Oko, Okana, and Nwanune. He warned that failing to strike would undermine union independence, accusing school managements of undue interference in union activities.
The controversy has left the campus in a state of uncertainty, with stakeholders anxiously awaiting a resolution.
