Benue State has withdrawn from a lawsuit challenging the legitimacy of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), following the suspension of its Attorney General, Barr. Bemsen Mnyim, for joining the case without permission.
The withdrawal comes amid a broader controversy surrounding the lawsuit, which contests the constitutionality of the EFCC’s establishment. Initially filed by Kogi State, the case argues that the EFCC was not validly established under the 1999 Constitution.
Benue’s decision follows Anambra, Adamawa and Ebonyi states, which also pulled out of the suit on Tuesday. Anambra’s withdrawal notice was submitted to the Supreme Court through its Attorney General, Prof. Sylvia Ifemeje.
Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia’s administration emphasized that no appointee is allowed to act unilaterally, especially in sensitive matters. The suspension of the Attorney General underscores the governor’s commitment to accountability and transparency.
The lawsuit, now backed by 13 states, will proceed without Benue, Anambra, Adamawa and Ebonyi. The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for October 22.
