Nigerian Lawmakers Back Bill to Strengthen Federal Road Safety Commission
In a significant move to enhance road safety in Nigeria, a bill sponsored by Rep. Abiodun Derin Adesida and Rep. Olaide Lateef Muhammed has received unanimous support from lawmakers for its second reading. The proposed legislation seeks to amend the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Act, 2007, to establish an FRSC Special Armed Squad and bolster the corps’ responsibilities.
The FRSC was established in 1988 as a paramilitary organization to address road safety concerns in Nigeria ⁴. Currently, the commission’s mandates include making highways safe for motorists and other road users, as well as clearing road obstructions.
By strengthening the FRSC’s powers and capabilities, this bill aims to improve road safety and reduce accidents in Nigeria. The proposed amendments will now proceed to the next stage of the legislative process.
