The Organised Labour has rejected the proposed minimum wage of ₦62,000 and ₦100,000, describing it as a “starvation wage” ¹. According to Labour, the proposed amount is not enough to sustain an average Nigerian worker ¹. Instead, Labour is demanding a minimum wage of ₦250,000, which was its latest demand at the last meeting of the Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage on Friday ¹.
Labour has given the Federal Government a one-week ultimatum to meet its demands, which expires on Tuesday, June 11 ¹. If the government fails to meet the demands, Labour has threatened to resume its nationwide industrial action ¹. The NLC Official said that Labour’s position is clear and that it will not negotiate a starvation wage ¹. He also said that Labour has never considered accepting ₦62,000 or any other wage that is below what they know is able to take Nigerian workers home ¹.
The Organised Labour and the Federal Government will resume negotiations by 1 pm today ². A highly placed source privy to the National Executive Council meeting of the organised labour said that the ongoing strike was “relaxed” in line with the agreement reached with the government ². The source also said that the Tripartite Committee on the new minimum wage would be sitting every day to conclude negotiations ².
