Gunmen on Sunday assassinated Alaba Excel Abbey, a campaign coordinator for Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
The police have launched an investigation into the killing, with the state command’s spokesman, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, saying:
“The state command is aware of the incident (killing) but investigation is ongoing to unravel all that happened.”
Abbey, who served as a ward coordinator for the Lucky Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organization Foot-Soldiers (LACO-SF), was killed at his home in Supare Akoko.
He was also the returning officer for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ward 10 during the recent primary election.
A relative confirmed that Abbey was shot in front of his house.
The LACO-SF has condemned the “gruesome murder” of Abbey and called on the security agencies, especially the police, to protect its members from such attacks.
According to the campaign organization’s spokesperson, Kayode Fasua, Abbey was actively involved in Aiyedatiwa’s campaign activities until his death.
The Director-General of LACO-FS in Akoko Southwest Local Government, David Ajobiewe, described the killing as “a big tragedy,” saying:
“Excel had been a resourceful coordinator for the Aiyedatiwa campaign organisation in Ward 10 of Supare and was never known to be violent and never had any history of a local or domestic dispute.”
Ajobiewe urged the police to “step up investigations into his gruesome murder and bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to book.”
