Governor Okpebholo Restores Oba of Benin’s Full Rights, Revives Cultural Legacy

In a historic decision aimed at fostering unity and preserving Edo State’s rich heritage, Governor Monday Okpebholo has reinstated the full statutory rights of the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II. This marks a decisive step toward rectifying the contentious policies of the previous administration, particularly over the ownership of Benin artefacts looted during the infamous 1897 British invasion.

Governor Okpebholo affirmed the Oba’s exclusive custodianship of the repatriated artefacts, aligning with the Federal Government’s recognition as outlined in its Gazette (Government Notice No. 25, Official Gazette No. 57, Volume 110). This acknowledgment solidifies the Oba’s role as the custodian of the artefacts and the cultural symbol of the Benin Kingdom.

As part of this cultural revival, the Governor rescinded the prior administration’s decision to revoke the concession of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre, which had been repurposed into a motor park. Governor Okpebholo announced plans to restore the centre to its original purpose, emphasizing:

“This administration is committed to preserving the historical essence of our cultural landmarks and ensuring they remain symbols of our heritage.”

In another decisive action, the Governor abolished the newly created traditional councils in Edo South, restoring the sole authority of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) and reinstating its statutory financial entitlements.

The administration has also distanced itself from the controversial Museum of West Africa Art (MOWA) and is backing the original plan to establish the Benin Royal Museum. This institution will house the returned artefacts, further embedding them within the cultural narrative of the Benin Kingdom.

Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s respect for the traditional monarchy and the customs of the Benin people, pledging to avoid interference in the internal affairs of the Benin Traditional Council.

“The Oba of Benin, as the spiritual and cultural leader of his people, remains the sole custodian of Benin traditions and heritage. My administration respects this sacred role and is committed to restoring all statutory rights to the Monarch,” he declared.

This sweeping restoration effort not only strengthens the relationship between the Government and the Benin Kingdom but also reaffirms Edo State’s dedication to honoring its cultural history and traditional institutions.
