Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, has formally apologized to Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, the House of Representatives member for Aba North/South, following a dispute during a package delivery.
In a video shared with the media, Abuwatseya expressed regret, asking for forgiveness from anyone affected by the incident. He called it an “ugly incidence” and hoped his apology would defuse tensions.
Reflecting on the situation, Abuwatseya urged Nigerians to avoid divisions based on “religion, tribes, or regions.” He added, “We should actually come together, see how we can unite this nation and move it forward.” He also admitted to making “provocative utterances” towards Hon. Ikwechegh and extended a direct apology to him. Abuwatseya emphasized unity, urging everyone to be “their brother’s keeper” regardless of ethnicity. He thanked his family and supporters for their loyalty, describing himself as a young hustler with no ill intent.
Hon. Ikwechegh also issued a public apology on Instagram, expressing regret for his actions towards Abuwatseya, the Nigerian Police Force, and the National Assembly. He admitted that his conduct “fell short of the standards expected from a public officeholder” but stated he had been provoked.
To resolve the issue, Hon. Ikwechegh revealed that he and Abuwatseya pursued alternative dispute resolution, resulting in a “mutual and respectful agreement.”
The incident initially attracted widespread attention after a viral video showed Hon. Ikwechegh repeatedly slapping Abuwatseya. In the footage, the lawmaker, frustrated by what he deemed the driver’s “rude behaviour,” was heard claiming he could “make him disappear without trace” without facing consequences. Public backlash led to Ikwechegh’s eventual apology and legal proceedings.
