A catastrophic tanker explosion has claimed the lives of 95 people and left 50 others hospitalized in Majiya village, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday when a fuel-laden tanker crashed, leading to a massive explosion.
According to DSP Lawal Shiisu Adams, spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, the driver of the tanker lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn and spill its contents into the village’s gutters and drainages. Locals attempting to scoop up the spilled fuel inadvertently ignited the explosion, resulting in a devastating fireball that ravaged the area.
This tragic event is not an isolated incident. Unfortunately, tanker explosions have occurred in various parts of the world, including Nigeria, claiming numerous lives. For instance, in 2000, a tanker explosion in Ibadan, Nigeria, killed between 100 and 200 people. Similarly, in 2012, a tanker fell into a ditch in Okobie, Nigeria, killing at least 121 people.
The Jigawa State Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident and will provide further updates as more information becomes available. The tragic loss of life serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety measures and responsible handling of hazardous materials.
