A devastating series of suicide bombing attacks in Gwoza, Borno State, has left 18 people dead and 19 seriously injured, according to Dr. Barkindo Saidu, Director-General of Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
The attacks occurred at a wedding ceremony and a funeral service, with the second blast happening as people gathered to mourn the victims of the first blast. The suicide bombers targeted a wedding ceremony and a funeral service, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.
SEMA has confirmed that 19 people with serious injuries have been transported to Maiduguri in four ambulances, while 23 others await military escort at the Medical Regimental Services (MRS) Clinic. The agency is working to coordinate helicopter transport for the injured and has mobilized emergency drugs to address the shortage in Gwoza.
The attacks have left the people of Borno in shock, reminiscent of the height of the insurgency between 2014 and 2014. The degree of injuries sustained by the victims ranges from abdominal ruptures to skull and limb fractures.
A suspected suicide bomber has also been reported in Pulka, a village near Gwoza town, raising concerns about potential further attacks. The military has imposed a curfew in Gwoza LGA in response to the attacks.
