The Nigerian Embassy in Dakar, Senegal, in collaboration with a Senegalese-based NGO, has successfully rescued 24 Nigerian girls from sexual exploitation in the Tamaccounda and Kedougou Regions of Senegal. According to the acting Ambassador, Salihu Abubakar, the victims, mostly underage girls between 11 and 24 years old, were trafficked from Nigeria through Cotonou, Benin Republic, and Mali to Senegal for prostitution.
Preliminary investigations revealed that most of the girls, school dropouts, hailed from Edo, Delta, Imo, Abia, and Plateau states.
The embassy and NGO’s joint efforts have saved the girls from further exploitation, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend the traffickers.
