The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has moved to clamp down on persistent loan defaulters by restricting access to banking services for individuals and companies classified as “chronic defaulters” and large-ticket obligors with non-performing loans.
In a directive aimed at strengthening financial discipline, the apex bank announced that affected borrowers will face significant limitations across the banking system. These restrictions are expected to include reduced access to credit facilities and other financial services until outstanding debts are resolved.
The policy targets borrowers whose loans have remained unpaid for extended periods, contributing to the growing volume of non-performing loans within Nigeria’s banking sector. By blacklisting such defaulters, the CBN seeks to compel repayment and restore stability to the financial system.
