The Centre for Justice and Equity (CJE) has dismissed reports alleging that a former Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, financed a coup plot against the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement signed by Chief Igoni William, the group described the allegations as unverified and expressed concern that some prominent online platforms published the claims without presenting credible evidence. CJE said it was troubling that such serious accusations were reported without confirmation from the Defence Headquarters or any relevant security agency.
The organisation questioned the source, authenticity, and timing of the information cited in the reports, stressing that in a democracy, allegations of this magnitude must be properly verified, officially communicated, and subjected to due process rather than circulated through speculation or selective leaks.
CJE also claimed that certain political actors in Bayelsa State appeared to be amplifying the anti-Sylva narrative for partisan reasons, warning that politicising national security issues for local rivalries is dangerous and could erode public trust and democratic stability.
The group stated categorically that there is no credible or verifiable evidence linking Sylva to any coup plot or unconstitutional activity, adding that his record in public service reflects a commitment to democratic governance and the rule of law.
CJE called on security agencies to clarify the status of any investigation through official channels, urged media organisations to uphold professionalism and strict verification standards, and advised political actors to refrain from exploiting national security matters for political gain.
According to the group, Nigeria’s democracy is best protected when justice is guided by facts, law, and due process — not conjecture or politically motivated narratives.
