Kano Gov Abba Yusuf Quits NNPP, Cites Internal Crisis and Public Interest

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) after weeks of intense speculation over his political future.

The decision was confirmed by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who presented Yusuf’s resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area. The resignation takes effect from January 25, 2026.

In the letter, Governor Yusuf said his decision was guided by the need to promote peace, unity, and the overall interest of Kano State, stressing that it was not driven by bitterness or personal grievances.

He attributed his exit to prolonged internal crises within the NNPP, including leadership disputes and multiple legal battles currently before the courts, which he said had weakened unity and created deep divisions at both state and national levels.

According to the governor, the persistent disagreements have led to growing disenfranchisement among party members, making reconciliation increasingly difficult and creating uncertainty within the party.

After what he described as careful reflection, Yusuf said he concluded that leaving the NNPP was in the best interest of the people of Kano State, while expressing gratitude to the party for the support and opportunity it gave him since 2022.

The governor is reportedly leaving the NNPP alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen across the state.

Confirming receipt of the resignation letter, the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the party’s internal challenges and praised Yusuf’s performance in office, describing him as one of the most effective governors produced by the NNPP.

Zubairu also commended Yusuf’s achievements in infrastructure, urban renewal, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment.

While Governor Yusuf has yet to formally announce his next political move, strong indications suggest he may defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), especially following his recent meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Analysts say the development could trigger a major political realignment in Kano State with wider national implications ahead of future elections.
