In a massive blow to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has officially resigned his membership, citing the intractable crisis within the party’s national leadership.
The abrupt departure leaves the opposition PDP severely weakened in the South-West geopolitical zone, where it is now left with only one sitting governor, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.
A statement released late on Monday night by the Governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed the development to Hobnob News, revealing that Governor Adeleke submitted his resignation letter on November 4, 2025, to the PDP Chairman of Ward 2, Sagba Abogunde, in Ede North Local Government Area of Osun State.
Adeleke Cites National Crisis
The Governor was explicit that the unrelenting turmoil at the national level of the party prompted his decision to step down from the platform that brought him to power.
“Due to the current crisis within the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the PDP with immediate effect,” the Governor wrote in his communication.
Adeleke also used the opportunity to thank the party for the platform provided, which allowed him to serve as a senator representing Osun West and subsequently as the Governor of Osun State.
Fallout of a Factional War
Adeleke’s exit underscores the deepening instability within the PDP, which has struggled to recover momentum since its loss in the 2023 general election. The subsequent emergence of different factions and internal wrangling has plunged the party into what analysts describe as an existential crisis. The recent emergence of Turaki as the new national chairman, which was expected to unify the party, has instead exacerbated the factional discord.
The resignation of Governor Adeleke, particularly following his withdrawal of a governorship nomination over related party issues, represents a significant loss of political capital and regional influence for the PDP.
2026 Election Speculation
While the Governor has yet to formally announce his new political destination, rumours are intensifying that he is preparing to join the Accord Party (AP). This speculation gains particular relevance as political maneuvering begins in earnest for the 2026 governorship election in Osun State, suggesting a potential realignment of forces in the state.
