Several residents have been reportedly trapped after a two-storey building collapsed in the early hours of Monday at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop, Oyingbo, Lagos.
The incident, which occurred around 12:20 a.m., was confirmed by the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, in a statement obtained by Hobnob News.
According to Adeseye, officials from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station were swiftly deployed to the site following a distress call. Preliminary reports revealed that the building had earlier been marked as distressed before it eventually caved in on occupants.
“It is an ongoing rescue involving an existing two-storey building which has reportedly been marked in distress before collapsing on the occupants,” the statement read.
So far, 15 persons — including seven men, four women, and four children — have been rescued with varying degrees of injuries and taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, and the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island.
Rescue operations are still ongoing as emergency responders continue to search through the rubble for possible survivors.
Building collapses have become a recurring tragedy in Lagos, often linked to weak enforcement of building codes, poor-quality materials, and inadequate supervision.
In one of the state’s worst incidents, a luxury high-rise building under construction in Ikoyi collapsed in November 2021, claiming at least 42 lives. Similarly, in September 2025, a four-storey structure under construction in Yaba crumbled, leaving several people dead and others trapped.
Authorities have since intensified rescue efforts at the latest collapse site as residents anxiously await further updates.
