M.I Abaga Says Nigeria Is the Best Place to Raise Children, Citing Strong Family and Community Values

Nigerian hip-hop icon and music executive M.I Abaga has stirred widespread reactions after asserting that Nigeria is still “the best place to raise children,” attributing this to the country’s strong sense of community and family-centred values, Eyes of Lagos reports.

In a recent interview, the One Naira hitmaker reflected on how Nigeria’s social structure fosters emotional stability and responsible upbringing. “In Nigeria, families, neighbours, and friends share in raising children — that collective support gives them a moral base that wealth alone can’t provide,” he explained.

Drawing from his experiences both at home and abroad, M.I contrasted Nigeria’s communal way of life with the more individualistic culture found in Western countries such as the United States. He observed that while foreign nations offer comfort and opportunities, their demanding work culture often limits parental involvement in children’s lives.

“In the U.S., people are constantly busy — sometimes juggling two or three jobs. The family network isn’t as close as ours. In Nigeria, even your neighbour contributes to raising your child,” he noted.

The award-winning rapper highlighted that Nigeria’s environment naturally cultivates empathy, resilience, and cultural identity, shaping well-rounded individuals. He believes these values are increasingly missing among children raised in more isolated societies.

While admitting he has not yet started a family, M.I shared his vision for his future children — one rooted in Nigerian culture but enriched by global exposure. “I want my kids to grow up here first, to know their heritage before experiencing life abroad. That balance between homegrown values and world education is what I hope to give them,” he said.
