Over 620,000 Traffic Offenders Nabbed in 11 Months – FRSC Sounds Alarm on Rising Road Violations

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has disclosed that more than 620,000 traffic offenders were apprehended across the country between January 2024 and July 2025 as part of a nationwide crackdown on dangerous driving practices.

According to the FRSC Spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the arrests include 350,536 recorded violations in the first half of 2024 and nearly 300,000 fresh offences documented from January to July 2025. The bulk of these infractions were linked to speeding, non-use of seatbelts, mobile phone use while driving, overloading, and mechanical defects.

“Every index that contributes to road crashes is what we address through enforcement. Arresting close to 300,000 offenders in just six months means we likely prevented 300 potential crashes,” Ogungbemide told Hobnob News.

The FRSC warned that commercial drivers remain a major concern, citing their frequent disregard for safety regulations despite targeted advocacy and interventions.

“Most of this year’s road crash surge is traceable to commercial vehicles. Sadly, some members of the public still undermine safety measures even with our persistent awareness campaigns,” Ogungbemide said.

He further revealed that road crashes decreased by 10% in 2024, while fatalities dropped by 1%. However, incidents such as fuel scooping after accidents continue to result in avoidable deaths.

Ogungbemide emphasized that ensuring road safety is a collective responsibility and cannot be shouldered by the FRSC alone. He also called for a transition toward multimodal transportation, including railways, waterways, and better mass transit systems, to ease the pressure on Nigeria’s over 200,000 km road network.

Regarding sanctions, Ogungbemide confirmed that traffic offenders are penalised in accordance with legal provisions, while more severe breaches are prosecuted through mobile courts.

“We are not just enforcing the law — we are saving lives. But for lasting results, citizens must support road safety efforts,” he added.

The FRSC has reiterated its commitment to curbing reckless driving and reducing the alarming rate of road accidents, particularly as the country enters high-mobility seasons.
